Honoring Service, Embracing Adventure: A Veterans Day Reflection
As we approach Veterans Day, it’s a moment to pause, to reflect, and to express our deepest gratitude to all who’ve worn the uniform — and to acknowledge the many ways their sacrifices ripple outward into our communities and lives.

As we approach Veterans Day, it’s a moment to pause, to reflect, and to express our deepest gratitude to all who’ve worn the uniform — and to acknowledge the many ways their sacrifices ripple outward into our communities and lives. Having proudly served as a volunteer firefighter for 16 years, I understand firsthand the call to service, the commitment to something greater than ourselves, and the fellowship that forms when we step up for others.
This post isn’t about travel for travel’s sake—it’s about celebrating those who served, offering meaningful acknowledgement, and yes, letting you know about special travel opportunities that exist to honor that service should you wish to explore.
Why We Celebrate
Every year, Veterans Day is more than a date on the calendar. It’s a commitment:
A nod to those who raised their right hand and said, “I serve.”
A quiet salute to the families who supported them.
A recognition that freedom is preserved in part through willingness to stand watch.
And for me, a reminder of my days with the fire-department: late calls, uncertain nights, relief when the danger passed, camaraderie in shared purpose.
To all veterans, thank you. Your service is woven into the fabric of our nation’s story.
Travel as Tribute — With Respect
If you’re a veteran or someone whose life has been touched by veteran service, and you’re looking at travel as part of your next chapter, there are options out there designed to honor you rather than simply sell to you. A few noteworthy examples:
Norwegian Cruise Line offers a “Military Appreciation Program” providing 10 % off cruise fare for veterans, active military, spouses, and spouses of surviving vets.
Princess Cruises provides up to US $250 onboard spending credit for veterans (and active/retired/disabled military) depending on voyage length.
Virgin Voyages makes a point of including veterans and first responders in its “Military & First Responders Rate” offering up to 15 % off certain sailings.
Other lines like MSC Cruises and Carnival Cruise Line also list military discounts among their offers.
These offers serve two purposes: one, to thank you in a practical way; and two, to enable you to explore the world under lines of honor. If you do book one of these, I encourage you to approach it not merely as a deal—but as a reward for your service and a moment of personal renewal.
A Few Thoughts Before You Sail
When using such travel benefits, a few tips to keep in mind:
Confirm the eligibility: Many programs require verification of veteran status, ID, or DD 214. For example, Norwegian uses ID.me verification.
Read the terms: Some discounts apply only to the fare portion, or to specific cabins, or may be combinable with other deals.
Reflect on purpose: Use the trip as a chance to relax and reflect. For veterans, it’s not just heading away—it’s about coming home to yourself, in a way.
Share your story: If comfortable, bringing the lens of “service” into your travel can deepen the journey—not just seeing sights, but seeing them with gratitude and purpose.
Honoring First Responders Too
I want to close by recognizing that service takes many forms—not just military. To all the firefighters, paramedics, EMTs, police officers, search & rescue volunteers, community responders: you are the line between chaos and care, crisis and recovery.
As someone who spent 16 years volunteering as a firefighter, I know the long nights, the adrenaline, the weight of responsibility, and the reward of stepping forward when others step back. Your service deserves celebration, too.
Some of the travel programs I mentioned earlier explicitly include first responders in their savings and recognition. For example, Virgin Voyages’ program welcomes “emergency first responders” alongside military and veterans.
In Closing
On this Veterans Day, whether you are a veteran yourself, the spouse of a veteran, a first responder, or simply someone who wants to honor those who serve—thank you. Thank you for your sacrifice, your willingness to be part of something bigger, your courage.
If you’re considering a journey—whether by ship, by road, by air—may it serve not just as escape, but as homage. May your steps carry the weight of gratitude. And may you find peace, renewal, and connection.
Here’s to every hero: past, present, and still answering the call.
